PCNL stands for Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy. It is minimal invasive surgery to remove kidney stone without making large incision in abdomen. In this surgery, a small skin puncture is made in back over kidney that is sequentially dilated up to 28 fr ( about Pen size diameter). A telescope with attached camera is passed through this tract up to kidney via a sheath placed in this tract. stone is seen in kidney via this telescope. Stone is fragmented with pneumatic lithoclast into fine fragments. all fragments are removed with forceps or dormia basket. Mini-PCNL is further advancement and allow one third size hole i kidney than standard PCNL. In this way, it create less trauma to kidney. Mini-PCNL causes less bleeding , less scar, lesser pain, more early recovery and overall more satisfaction to patient. Patient can be discharged next day after surgery in most cases although we prefer after two days. PCNL and Mini-PCNL are highly expertise surgery and done by experienced Urologist Only in a dedicated urology centers.
