Uriam Ghat is a small but steadily developing township located about 14 km south of Sarupathar, a sub-divisional headquarters of Golaghat district in Assam. The township is expanding along the banks and fertile valley of the Rengmai River, close to the border with the neighbouring state of Nagaland. Over the years, Uriam Ghat has grown into a lively settlement inhabited by a mix of communities including Assamese, Boro, Cachari, Bengali, Nepali and Manipuri people, many of whom are building their livelihoods through trade, agriculture and small businesses. Despite this visible growth and prosperity, many settlers in the area face a significant challenge. Even after living here for nearly fifty years, a large number of residents have yet to obtain valid land documents from the Government of Assam. Just 8 km from Uriam Ghat, across the Rengmai River and near the Doyang River, both flowing along the Assam–Nagaland border, lies Lakhinagar, the largest Manipuri village in Golaghat district. Manipuri families began settling in Uriam Ghat in the early 1980s, and today around ten Manipuri households live in and around the local bazaar area. (Visited on 3 March 2026) (Part 1)
