The so-called rivalry between Rajesh Khanna (the first superstar of Bollywood, fondly called Kaka) and Sanjeev Kumar (one of the finest character actors ever, known for his versatility in films like Sholay, Aandhi, and Angoor) is one of the most talked-about personal feuds in 1970s Hindi cinema. Unlike many hyped rivalries, this one was deeply personal, rooted in jealousy, misunderstandings, and romantic entanglements rather than just box-office competition. They worked together in a few films (like Aap Ki Kasam in 1974), but the coldness lasted for years — they reportedly never visited each other's homes over 25+ years in the industry. The Main Trigger: Jealousy Over Anju Mahendru Rajesh Khanna was in a long, live-in relationship with actress Anju Mahendru from around 1966 to 1972 (about 6-7 years). It was intense but turbulent — Khanna wanted marriage, but Anju repeatedly turned him down. After their breakup in 1972, gossip magazines spread rumours that Anju was now romantically involved with Sanjeev Kumar, who was actually a very close family-like friend (Anju's mother treated him like a brother, and she tied Rakhi on him every year). Rajesh Khanna believed the rumours — he was described by many (including Sanjeev himself in warnings to Anju) as "shakki" (suspicious/insecure). This jealousy sparked the bad blood.Anju later clarified multiple times: Sanjeev was like family — "like her mother’s brother." There was never any romance. But the damage was done. The Famous "Real Slap" Incident Years later, during the shoot of a film (believed to be around the Aap Ki Kasam period or similar), there was a scene where Rajesh Khanna's character had to slap Sanjeev Kumar's. Instead of a staged/fake slap (standard in films), Rajesh reportedly delivered a hard, real one — holding onto the grudge from the Anju rumours. This became legendary gossip in Bollywood circles, seen as proof of lingering personal anger. Another Layer: The Hema Malini Humiliation Story There's also a separate (but connected) incident from the early 1970s, detailed in the authorized biography An Actor’s Actor by Hanif Zaveri and Sumant Batra: Sanjeev Kumar was seriously involved with Hema Malini (marriage talks were on, but families disagreed over her continuing to act). At a public event/premiere, organizers invited Sanjeev with Hema and Rajesh Khanna with Sharmila Tagore (as they were shooting together). Rajesh knew Sanjeev would be there, but Sanjeev didn't know Rajesh was coming. Rajesh entered dramatically, holding Hema Malini's hand publicly, which humiliated Sanjeev deeply. He reportedly stepped down from the stage, sat far away, and later shared his pain with Jaya Bachchan. This act is said to have widened the rift in Sanjeev-Hema's relationship, which eventually ended. Many see this as Rajesh's way of "getting back" at Sanjeev. How It Ended The two never fully reconciled during Sanjeev's lifetime. But when Sanjeev Kumar passed away in 1985 at just 47, Rajesh Khanna visited his home to pay respects — with tears in his eyes, according to the biography. It showed some underlying emotion despite the years of distance. Was It Really a "Rivalry"? It was more personal animosity fueled by ego, insecurity, and gossip than professional competition. Rajesh was the superstar phenomenon with massive fan following; Sanjeev was the respected actor's actor. They were very different — one larger-than-life, the other subtle and real. The "mystery" remains because much of it was never publicly confirmed by the two stars themselves — it lived through industry whispers, biographies, and old interviews.
