Imaging winter targets in Taurus with the Seestar S50 and S30. It is a cold night for imaging in Columbia, Missouri, and the session may be cut short if temperatures continue to fall. Conditions are otherwise favorable for imaging with my Seestar S50 and Seestar S30. My broader objective is to conduct systematic observations under Bortle 1 skies in Texas and compare those results with equivalent observations obtained under Bortle 7–8 skies near my home in Columbia. A Unihedron Sky Quality Meter reading of 16.6 mag/arcsec² corresponds to roughly Bortle 8 conditions. The Moon is 98% illuminated (waxing gibbous), adding significant sky brightness. Tonight’s session focuses on Taurus, including: Pleiades (M45) Crab Nebula (M1) Hyades These objects span emission and reflection nebulae as well as dense stellar regions, providing an excellent testbed for evaluating contrast, sensitivity, and fine-detail recovery under light-polluted conditions. At present, the Seestar S50 is the only instrument available to me at Starfront Observatories, limiting direct Bortle 1–to–Bortle 7 comparisons at that site to this platform. In Columbia, my comparative imaging program includes multiple systems: Seestar S30, Seestar S50, Dwarf 3, Dwarf Mini, Celestron Origin, Unistellar Equinox 2, and a dedicated astrophotography rig. The goal is to assess relative performance across varying sky conditions, with particular emphasis on angular resolution, sensitivity, and fine-detail recovery.
