Yesterday we stumbled across the extensive Percy French Collection on display at the North Down Bangor Museum. ( Closed on Mondays ) The collection was recently donated to the museum by The Percy French Society. This fabulous collection consists of around 90 watercolours and 800 items of memorabilia, including musical instruments, letters, programmes, photographs and diaries. The items were collected by the society over 40 years from a combination of donations from Percy’s daughters and also by purchasing from auctions. This is a must see for anyone interested in the genius of Percy French! The collection will be on display until 1st May 2023. I decided to amalgamate all my recent and past Percy French video footage into one video and this video is the result. Percy French William Percy French (1 May 1854 – 24 January 1920 ) Irish songwriter, author, poet, entertainer and painter. French was born at Clooneyquinn House, near Tulsk, County Roscommon, the son of an Anglo-Irish landlord. He was educated in England at Kirk Langley and Windermere College before going to Foyle College in Derry. He wrote his first successful song while studying at Trinity College Dublin (TCD) in 1877 for a smoking concert. That song was, "Abdul Abulbul Amir". French graduated from TCD as a civil engineer in 1881 and joined the Board of Works in County Cavan as an Inspector of Drains! When the Board of Works reduced its staff around 1888, French turned to journalism as the editor of The Jarvey, a weekly comic paper. When the paper failed, French's long and successful career as a songwriter and entertainer began. Percy French is remembered mostly for his songs. There are more than 40 attributed to him. Many are comic/satirist in nature. Many are tinged with sadness and speak of Irish emigration. chief amongst them are Abdul Abulbul Amir (1877) Are Ye Right There Michael? (1897) Come Back, Paddy Reilly, to Ballyjamesduff The Mountains of Mourne (1896) Phil the Fluther's Ball Slattery's Mounted Foot (1889) Percy French was also an artist who created quiet a volume of highly prized work. Artworks by French have increased in value. In 2005, the Percy French watercolour landscape 'Where ever I go my heart turns back to the County Mayo', was sold by Dublin auctioneers Whyte's for a then record price of €44,000. It is also known as "The Iveagh Percy French" as it came from the Guinness family collection. Some ten days after this auction, the Apollo Gallery sold this iconic painting on to an American collector for €65,000 I'm happy to say that most of French's archive now resides in the North Down Museum, Bangor, County Down!
