As part of my studies in imitation exercises, I had to write a piano piece in the style of Brahms. This was perhaps one of my greatest challenges yet, considering the highly refined musical language that Brahms had crafted for himself. Certain characteristics of his piano music I tried to emulate: wide arpeggio figures in the lower range, voices harmonised in thirds and sixths, intertwining counterpoint between voices, irregular bass note placements and rather chunky, solid chord voicings. Many things I definitely could have done better: A finer control of harmonic rhythm and the use of hemiolas, greater motivic unity between sections and even within melodic phrases, more Brahmsian harmonies like the transition starting from m.27. All in all, a very difficult but rewarding study which made me appreciate even more the masterful music that Brahms has left us with. Thanks for listening!
