SOUNDBITE (English) Helen Zille, Democratic Alliance Leader: "We are completely rejecting of the kind of old boys' club of former liberation struggle heroes, who simply look after each other in a closed crony system. The closed crony system extends far beyond South Africa's borders. We will have an open opportunity rights-based system in our foreign policy. We will try and get a charter for the African Union that gets most countries to agree that if people breach that charter they will be expelled and face the pressure from their fellow countries." 13. Wide of Zille talking to journalist STORYLINE: South Africa's main opposition party, the Democratic Alliance (DA), on Saturday launched its manifesto for the April 22 national elections. Speaking to a packed auditorium in Johannesburg, DA leader Helen Zille said the party would offer the country "a plan to bring change and hope". Part of that plan, she said, involved a "zero-tolerance approach to corruption". Earlier this month, a court said the corruption trial of the man in line to become South Africa's next president will not start until after the election. The judge has set an August 25 trial date for African National Congress (ANC) leader Jacob Zuma, who faces charges of corruption, fraud, money-laundering and racketeering relating to a multibillion-rand (dollar) government arms deal in the late 1990s. On the sidelines of the DA launch, Zille referred to the political situation in Zimbabwe when she spoke of a "closed crony system" extending far beyond South Africa's borders. She called for an African Union charter, which would give member nations the power to expel countries guilty of human rights abuses. The DA's position as the main opposition party has been threatened with the emergence of the breakaway Congress of the People's Party (COPE). COPE was formed late last year by politicians who left the ANC, which has governed South Africa since the first all-race elections in 1994. COPE presents the governing party with its most serious challenge, but is not expected to make major inroads into the two-thirds majority the ANC enjoys in parliament.
