The Bodetal (also called the Bode Valley) is a scenic gorge in the Harz Mountains in Germany. We started our hike from Seilbahnen Thale Erlebniswelt which is located at the base of the valley near the town center. From there, multiple hiking routes are accessible. We took the Rosstrappe trail that takes you through dense forests and walking along steep paths, offering incredible views of the valley and surrounding mountains. The distance is approximately 4-5 km (one way) and takes around 1.5 - 2 hours (depending on pace and stops). The difficulty is from moderate to challenging as mostly uphill with some steep sections. Once you reach the summit of Rosstrappe, you will be treated to a panoramic view of the entire Bodetal and beyond. It’s a breathtaking spot for photos and rest (bring enough water and snacks). The rock formations around are striking, and the surrounding forest and river create a peaceful atmosphere. If you prefer a less strenuous return like we did, you can take the Rosstrappe Chairlift down to Thale after reaching the summit of Rosstrappe. It only takes about 5-7 minutes and offers fantastic views of the valley. Enjoy!
