(26 Jun 1997) English/Nat The auction of Diana, Princess of Wales' dresses was a triumph on Wednesday. The sale of Princess Diana's midnight blue gown at Christie's topped the record for most expensive garment sold at auction - going for 222,500 dollars. The high profile event netted over five-million, 7-hundred thousand dollars in total - another record for a charity bash. Eleven-hundred lucky people were allowed inside the auction in New York City. Bidders attending Christie's auction by phone or in person took the opportunity to own a piece of royalty. The dress which brought in the biggest bid was that in which Princess Diana danced with John Travolta at the White House. The previous Christie's record was for the white suit that Travolta wore in Saturday Night Fever. Christie's International Chairman Charles Hindlip fielded bids between five-thousand and over two-hundred-thousand dollars. Anyone expecting to walk away with a dress priced lower than a luxury car was disappointed. Princess Diana's 80 gowns raised a total of 3.26 (m) million dollars for AIDS and cancer charities. SOUNDBITE: (English) "As you probably know the total for the auction three (m) million two-hundred and 58- thousand, 750-hundred dollars (3,258,750) and to that can be added the two (m) million, five-hundred-thousand (2,500,000) dollars that was raised before the sale by the sale of catalogues and syndication rights. So that makes a grand total of just over five (m) million, seven-hundred-thousand dollars (5,700,000) which I think is something of a record for a charity event." SUPER CAPTION: Lord Hindlip, Auctioneer The least expensive dress was a peach coloured number, which went for a mere 19- thousand dollars. The last high profile Christie's auction was for the estate sale of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, a woman considered to be the closest thing to American royalty there is. Everyone seemed to enjoy the occasion, whether they made a purchase or not. SOUNDBITE: (English) Q. Were you excited about getting it? "We're overwhelmed, I'm nauseous actually. Of course we'll try it on." SUPER CAPTION: Kate McEnroe, President of American Movie Classics and Romance Classics (Cable networks) SOUNDBITE: (English) Q. Why didn't you buy any dresses? "Too expensive. My boyfriend wasn't here." SUPER CAPTION: Vox pop Although prices for the gowns quickly overtook the budgets of many bidders, most were happy to see the bidding so high. The money would go to a good cause. SOUNDBITE: (English) Q. How much did you go? "Well we went pretty high but the things are going for a great deal of money. It's terrific, they're raising a lot of money for charity so it's a wonderful cause, and it's great to be a part of it." SUPER CAPTION: Vox pop Britain's AIDS Crisis Trust and the Royal Marsden hospital for cancer patients will receive proceeds from the sale along with several American charities. Christie's believes that most of the buyers at the auction were American.
