In this video: We demonstrate the industry-standard process for installing a new, high-performance concrete floor in a lowered basement. This final stage of the underpinning process is critical for ensuring structural stability, thermal comfort, and long-term durability. Operating in Toronto, we adhere to strict installation protocols to prevent settlement and moisture intrusion. From the gravel base to the final trowel finish, every layer is engineered to meet or exceed building standards. 🏗️ The Professional Installation Process Site Preparation & Compaction: We begin by spreading 4 to 5 inches of clean gravel across the entire floor area. This bedding is mechanically compacted using a vibratory plate compactor to create a solid, stable base. This critical step prevents floor settlement and protects the future slab from shifting or cracking over time. Moisture Management: To maintain a dry living environment, we install a Super 6 poly moisture barrier directly over the gravel. This impermeable layer blocks ground moisture from evaporating into the concrete and the basement air, ensuring the new floor lasts longer. Thermal Insulation (Recommended): We strongly recommend installing 2 inches of rigid foam insulation under the slab. This provides an R10 thermal layer that separates the concrete from the cold ground, reducing heat loss and lowering energy bills. The result is a basement floor that feels warm and comfortable, similar to a wood floor. Structural Reinforcement: Before pouring, we install welded steel wire mesh throughout the entire footprint. This reinforcement ties the slab together, adds significant structural strength, and helps control cracking. Pouring & Finishing: We pour a 3 to 4-inch thick slab using a high-strength 32 MPa concrete mix. Once placed, the surface is expertly levelled, troweled, and finished to achieve a clean, smooth look suitable for finished flooring or a modern polished concrete aesthetic. 📋 Technical Specifications Concrete Strength: 32 MPa High-Strength Mix Slab Thickness: 3 – 4 Inches Base: 4-5" Compacted Clean Gravel Insulation: 2" Rigid Foam (R10 Value) Vapour Barrier: Super 6 Poly Reinforcement: Welded Steel Wire Mesh For more details about basement concrete floor in Toronto: 🔗https://strongbasements.com/concrete-...
