It dates back to the times when enslaved peoples were brought from Africa to South America. In an attempt to crush their spirit, their drums and musical instruments were taken away. This vile attempt to steal culture from the enslaved peoples only resulted in the creation of a powerful new hybrid type of music called called Música Afroperuano or AfroPeruvian music. Cajón drums became the bass drums, cajitas and shekeres served as hand percussion and the quijada also played a role in this type of music.
