(FULL VIDEOS LIST BELOW) These are just some recordings, a simple preview, about a gigantic force of nature, Adelaida Negri, who sang for more than 40 years all around the globe, from the Met to the most demanding and feared Italian opera theaters. As Lilli Lehmann in the 1800's, Adelaida Negri sang Queen of the Night, Isolde, Sonnambula, Macbeth, Gioconda, Lucia, Norma, Hamlet, Anna Bolena, Mefistofele, Guglielmo Tell, Il Trovatore and many more up to 64 roles. Negri started her career on the 1970's, when so many great divas were still active: Nilsson, Caballe, Gencer, Scotto, Obratszova, Verreth, and so many others. Only 15 years later her destiny would have been totally different. Negri's main asset was... astonishment, an amazing technique and talent, love for Art and risk which, altogether, endowed her performances with a superior thrilling whatever by power, range, risk or acting. Jose Carreras said: "I didn't know that such a superior singing even existed". Shirley Verreth, at the Met stage congratulated her: "Your technique and voice belong to the truly, old Bel Canto school, completely lost today, that I never thought I could listen snymore". Being a "free bird", her survived recordings are the "real thing", as 99% from them are live recordings treasured and shared from publics all around the world. These live recordings we present here are actually a very small part of the total, and they were taken at the main opera houses in New York, Washington, Roma, Paris, Napoli, Madrid, Barcelona, Buenos Aires, and a long etcetera, showing her with some of her colleagues: Pavarotti, Domingo, Carreras, Giaccomini, Lima, Merrith, Milnes, Bruson, Manuguerra, Cappuccilli, Cossotto or Dupuy, among so many others. Adelaida Negri's husband and teacher was the fabulous Bernardo Toscano, baritone born in 1920 whose tecnique was a 3rd. generation direct heritage from the legendary Manuel Garcia, (first Almaviva, considered "father" of the Bel Canto school) who, astonishing enough, was father and teacher of Maria Malibran and Pauline Viardot. Adelaida Negri and Bernardo Toscano, travelling all around for 40 years, were a fascinating, good-hearted couple, absolutely beloved and cherished on the international "connoisseur" opera circles. After her 60's, Negri and Toscano established back in her natal Buenos Aires (Toscano was born in Calabria, Italy) and both decided to give their savings, experience, talent and good will to help launching young singers careers by fully financing, producing, directing and, many times, leading herself the casting. This exhausting "tour de force" took a toll on some of those "after 60 years old" performances. Many times in those years, just one hour before singing Norma, Nabucco or Lucia, Adelaida Negri was still at the stage mentoring young singers or working all around the stage om last details and needs. Exactly as it used to be on many Italian opera theaters in the Golden Age. Negri and Toscano lived just for Art and passion: that was their real joy and payment. And, indeed, they had a lot.
