Named for former U.S. senator Arthur Vandenberg, the Vandenberg Prize is the World Affairs Council of Western Michigan's most prestigious event where we honor an individual whose efforts to develop global understanding and collaboration has been influential on the world stage. Past recipients include Ambassador Jon Huntsman Jr., former U.S. Ambassador to China and Russia, General James Mattis, the 26th Secretary of Defense, and Bridget Brink, former U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine. Our 2025 recipient, Ambassador Nicholas Burns served most recently as U.S. ambassador to China from 2021 to January, 2025. Prior to this role, Ambassador Burns served as ambassador to Greece and NATO, and used his rich knowledge of global diplomacy in this discussion. Covering topics from global conflicts, the current trade landscape, and memories of notable global cooperation during Ambassador Burns' career – perhaps most notably the first invocation of NATO Article 5 following the September 11 attacks – this event shed light on the complexities and challenges we face in today's world and invited hope into the conversation as well. You can find out more about the World Affairs Council on our website, worldmichigan.org and check out more videos on our channel as we continue on our mission to bring the world to you. As we like to say at the council, "to change the world, first know the world."
