Dr. Michael Higgins, Hip & Knee Replacement Specialist, explains how he uses computer assistance to do the Ready Knee procedure. Knee replacement surgery removes degenerated cartilage from the knee joint and replaces it with implants. This is done to restore function and eliminate pain. Our physicians perform computer assisted robotic knee replacements. Robotic surgery provides the patient with increased precision and accuracy and makes the knee replacement less invasive. Dr. Michael Higgins, born and raised in Buffalo, New York, joined Tidewater Orthopaedics in Hampton, VA in 2006 and is a board-certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and fellowship-trained by the American Acaedemy of Orthopaedic Surgeons in hip and knee replacement specialist. He believes practicing orthopaedic surgery and serving his patients is a privilege, a philosophy he learned from his mentors throughout his orthopaedic training. Dr. Higgins began his training at The State University of New York at Geneseo, where he earned his undergraduate degree before continuing on to medical school at the State University of New York Upstate Medical University in Syracuse. After receiving his medical degree, Dr. Higgins completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at Buffalo University, The State University of New York, and an additional year of specialty training focused on complex hip and knee replacement at the Roanoke Orthopaedic Center in Roanoke, Virginia. The most rewarding aspects of his practice are fixing or reconstructing orthopaedic problems, whether simple or very complex, and restoring mobility in his patients so they can continue to live active and fulfilling lifestyles. Tidewater Orthopaedics is proud to uphold a long-standing tradition of providing superior orthopaedic care, treating thousands of patients per year from Hampton, Williamsburg, Newport News, and other nearby areas in Virginia since our founding in the 1970s. As the only subspecialty orthopaedic practice on the Peninsula, we’re well known throughout the community as “The Specialist Group.” Our excellent reputation is based, in part, on the high level of specialization of our doctors, all of whom are board-certified (American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery), fellowship-trained (American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons) orthopaedic surgeons who have obtained further education and certifications in their respective areas of specialty. This important differentiating factor enables us to offer our patients highly focused care, and also sets us apart from most other practices in Virginia. Serving as both an orthopaedic center and a sports medicine clinic, Tidewater Orthopaedics specializes in treating a wide variety of injuries and conditions affecting the musculoskeletal system, including arthritis, rotator cuff and ACL tears, trigger finger, carpal tunnel syndrome, Achilles tendonitis, plantar fasciitis, and more. With a goal of treating our patients as conservatively as possible, we offer a full range of nonsurgical options, such as medications, pain management, splinting, and hand and physical therapy provided by our own in-house staff of outstanding therapists. This dedicated team of professionals works closely with our surgeons to collaboratively develop and implement an individualized plan of care for each patient, which is designed to alleviate pain, improve function, and enhance quality of life.
