This aria appears near the beginning of the Comedy-Ballet "Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme" (LWV 43) a multimedia music and dance production for the royal theater in Chambord for King Louis XIV's court. The satirical play and overall concept were the work of Molière. The music was written by Jean-Baptiste Lully, a French composer of Italian origin.
