#Australia #Historic #Church #History #Ebenezer #Urbex Australia's Oldest Church Still standing, Built in 1809, it is still in operation today. Located approx. 70km from Sydney, north of the town of Windsor in N.S.W, Is the historical township of Ebenezer. The founders were Scottish Free Settlers who immigrated from London after being offered free passage to Australia and 100 acre land grants. Initially the settlers who were Presbyterian worshipped together under a large gum tree, then at small dwelling while the church started being built in 1806. The gum tree still can be viewed across the road from the church, although due to a wind storm in 2005, it has been reduced to a stump. As the settlers had children and others settled, they needed a schoolhouse, the church was used as a duel purpose also housing school at the southern end. A Schoolmasters residence was built next to the Church in 1817. The church doubled as the school for 70 years until an official schoolhouse was built. It was burnt down a few years after it was built and once again the church housed the school until another school was built in 1902 and this school still remains today. The first burial was in 1812, coffins were brought by boat along the Hawkesbury River followed by other boats with mourners to the church. Many of the original settler families are buried on the grounds, as are their descendants. The church still holds mass and apparently the descendants of the original settlers still worship here today. The church sits on a hill overlooking the Hawkesbury River, surrounded by gum trees and well maintained grounds, The Schoolmasters house is a kiosk and museum, there is a seated area to have a cuppa and take in the tranquil surrounds. It is a great spot to view Australian History and to take a break from Sydney, although it is a cemetery, it looks like a great picnic spot the closer you get to the river. When we are out of Lockdown in Sydney, we will be back to do a night explore and see if we could chat to the settlers who built this great township.
