Chauhan ruler Vasudev Chauhan founded Sambhar 300 years before Christ. This place is the original place of the glorious Chauhan dynasty. This is the world famous Sambhar Lake. This natural lake is the second largest saltwater lake in India. Chilka Lake, located in the state of Orissa in India, is the largest saltwater lake in the country. Sambhar Lake is surrounded by the Aravalli ranges from all sides. Four major rivers fall into the Sambhar Lake - Rupangarh and its tributaries Khari and Mentha and its tributary Khandel. In the rainy season, this lake is filled with water. It is believed that the silt in the Arctic and Nice gorges of the Aravalli Mountains is the source of salt and the soluble sodium compound located in the silt dissolves in water during rainy days and reaches the lake by rivers. The saline water of this lake is dried in beds and made salt from it. It produces 8.7 percent of the country's total salt. Located at an altitude of 1,200 feet above the sea level, when the lake is full, then its area becomes 230 square kilometers. Its drainage area is spread over 500 kg square kilometers, this lake is about 32 kilometers long and 3 to 12 kilometers wide. The evaporation process intensifies during the summer, reducing its size considerably. More than 700 tonnes of salt is produced here annually, here salt is produced by Hindustan Salt Limited and subsidiary company Sambhar Salts Limited Company, which was established in 1964 and sodium sulfate plant has also been established here. Salt is prepared from the Sambhar Lake by Keishakhar method and salt is obtained from the evapotranspiration method by making curry on layers of saline rocks. Salt prepared by this method is called 'Kyaar' salt. Algae called Spirulina is found in this salt, which contains up to 65% protein. To carry the salt from one place to the other, here a small railway line is laid on which a wagon carrying trolleenum salt is carried. Efforts are being made to make this place a tourist destination. This lake was given the status of Rajasthan's second Ramsar site or Vishwa Nambhoomi in 1990. Keoladeo is the first Ramsar site or Vishwa Nambhoomi. There is also the only salt museum in the country built in 1870. Every year, domestic and foreign birds visit here, including the state bird of Gujarat, flamingos and the Kurja bird symbolizing the Viraha.
