In this session, we continue our spiritual journey through the sacred pages of the 'Gospel of Sri Ramakrishna' (Sri Sri Ramakrishna Kathamrita). We will explore what it truly means to be human, the concept of selfless action (Nishkama Karma), and the profound, unifying message of Thakur: the harmony of all religions ("Jato Mat, Tato Path" - As many faiths, so many paths). It is defined by having a conscience (Bibek), compassion (Daya), and love. Without these qualities, we are no different from animals. We must ask ourselves if we are truly living up to the title of 'human'. Fear Breeds Selfishness: Much of our selfishness comes from a place of fear—fear for ourselves and our immediate family. This fear makes us indifferent to the suffering of others. But this is a trap, as one day we may be the ones suffering, and we will be surrounded by the same indifference we showed to others. Karma Yoga in Practice: One cannot simply abandon action (Karma). We must perform actions to exhaust the results of our past actions, just as one uses a new thorn to remove an old one. The key is to act without attachment to the results (Nishkama Karma). The Principle of Adaptability: When Thakur was thirsty, he drank water from a glass tumbler, which was not the customary practice for a Brahmin of his time. He was only concerned if the glass was clean. This teaches a profound lesson: adapt to the time and place ("Jeshmin Deshe Jadachar") and focus on the essence of purity, not rigid, external rituals. Harmony of All Religions: The core of Sri Ramakrishna's message is "Jato Mat, Tato Path" (As many faiths, so many paths). He didn't just preach this; he lived it by performing the sadhana (spiritual practices) of different religions like Islam and Christianity and realised that they all lead to the same God. This is a powerful message of unity for our divided world. Spiritual Transcript What does it truly mean to be a human being? We have to question this. Just as an animal is defined by its characteristics, a human is also defined by certain qualities. Are we living up to them? We must have compassion, love, and most importantly, a conscience (Bibek). This conscience is the most valuable thing. Without these, we are merely two-legged animals. Often, our inaction in the face of injustice comes from fear. This fear makes us selfish. We think, 'As long as my family is safe, I don't care.' But if we remain selfish and silent today when others are suffering, tomorrow when the fire reaches our own home, we will find ourselves surrounded by the same selfish people we once were. The scriptures like the Gita and the Gospel give us the strength to be fearless. They teach us to rise above this self-centered fear. The path of Karma Yoga is difficult because we naturally become attached to our actions and their results. We cannot stop performing Karma; it is how we exist. The goal is to use Karma to exhaust past Karma, like using one thorn to remove another. We must perform our duties, but for the sake of God, without expecting any personal gain. The life of a householder is for fulfilling needs, not for indulging in endless desires. We must ask ourselves: how much do we truly need? The rest of our actions should be selfless, dedicated to a higher purpose. This is what Thakur taught: when you encounter God, will you ask for hospitals and schools, or will you ask for a place at His lotus feet? The ultimate goal of all our actions should be to attain pure devotion. Thakur was once thirsty while travelling and was offered water in a glass tumbler, which was against the customs of the time. He simply asked, "Is the glass clean?" and drank the water. This shows his practical nature and his focus on the essence rather than rigid rules. He followed the principle of "Jeshmin Deshe Jadachar" – adapt to the time, place, and circumstance. The picture in Surendra's house was very significant. It showed Sri Ramakrishna pointing out the harmony of all religions—Hindu, Muslim, Christian, Buddhist. This is his greatest message to the world: "Jato Mat, Tato Path" (As many faiths, so many paths). He didn't just say this; he experienced it. He practiced the sadhana of Islam and Christianity and realised that all paths, if followed with sincerity, lead to the one and only God. His message is not about division, but about addition and unity. He is here to bring everyone together, to show that whether you say 'Jal', 'Water', or 'Pani', the substance is the same.
