Restoring peatland is a crucial part of dealing with the climate crisis. Watch this video to learn more about this precious habitat and why it needs your help. 00:00 - Intro 00:00 - What is peatland? 01:08 - Who benefits from healthy peatland? 02:13 - Why is peatland under threat? 02:59 - How can we save and restore our peatland? Peatlands are unique wetlands made up of rich organic soil and mossy vegetation, and are among the most valuable ecosystems for nature and carbon on Earth. Peatlands improve our water quality, support natural flood management, are home to an array of special species and provide wild places for people to enjoy too. In the UK, peatland covers around 12% of our land area and stores over 3 billion tonnes of carbon, however over 80% of it is degraded. The RSPB is working on uplands restoration projects across the UK. Peatland restoration at RSPB Lake Vyrnwy is carried out in partnership with Hafren Dyfrdwy.
