The history of Finnish football dates back to 1908, when the inaugural Finnish football championship was held. The tournament featured four teams: Unitas Sports Club, Helsingin Jalkapalloklubi (HJK), Polyteknikkojen Urheiluseura (PUS), and Viipurin Reipas. Unitas emerged victorious, defeating PUS 4–1 in the final . This marked the beginning of organized football competitions in Finland. From 1908 to 1929, the Finnish championship was decided through a cup competition. In 1930, the league format was introduced with the establishment of the Mestaruussarja, the top division of Finnish football, which continued until 1989 . During this period, clubs from Helsinki, Turku, and Vyborg dominated the league. The last season of Mestaruussarja in 1989 saw FC Kuusysi crowned champions. In 1990, the league was replaced by Veikkausliiga, which remains Finland's premier football division today. The 2024 Veikkausliiga season, held from April 6 to October 19, featured a tight title race. KuPS (Kuopion Palloseura) clinched their seventh league title with 56 points, narrowly edging out Ilves Tampere, who finished second with 54 points. HJK Helsinki, the reigning champions for the past four seasons, settled for third place with 45 points. Ashley Coffey of AC Oulu was the league's top scorer with 12 goals. Meanwhile, Ekenäs IF and FC Lahti were relegated to the Ykkösliiga after finishing at the bottom and losing their relegation play-offs.
