And the finale from Cornwall, a non-native Bristol VR, but not one adverse to the coast, we have a Southdown Series 3, 583, GNJ583N. 583 was new in 1975, and was numerically the last of a batch of 6 pre-production Series 3 Bristol VRs that were new to Southdown, the vehicle spent its entire operational life at the south coast, with Southdown from 1975 to 1986, and then after deregulation with Brighton & Hove until 1990. From 1992 to 2005 it headed north to work as a Mobile Road Safety Unit with Wirral Council. 2005 saw it pass to preservation, and through multiple different preservationists until its current owner aqccuired in March 2022. 583 uncommonly for actively preserved VRs, is powered by a Leyland 510 engine, which is more commonly associated with Leyland Nationals, combined with its 5-speed SCG Semi-Automatic gearbox made for an interesting audio combination, with the rattle and whine of the 510 engine harmonising with the melodic scream transmission. Exquisite This was running as part of the Penzance VR Revival & Running Day and was running on route 20 from Penzance to Praa Sands via Long Rock, Marazion and Rosudgeon. Do enjoy this gorgeous beauty of a bus. Loud and proud!
