Today things went wrong in the form of closed roads and not once but four times. As I was already doing an ambitious 101km with 1600m of ascent and it was seriously warm this was a bit of a challenge by the time I got to my hotel 120 sweaty km later. The first closed roads was in the deep gorge running east from Arenas, as I’d said in day 19 there were signs but I hadn’t really paid attention to them on arrival there and I left via a laneway that was after where they were. So that was a 5km dead end and a 15km diversion with a lot of extra climbing So I stick my head down and didn’t stop even when I’d completed the diversion until I’d done 50km when fortunately I did stop for a substantial lunch. There was a minor road closure a bit further on but that was a short diversion. Things got messy again at Lloredo where the route ran along a very steep hillside, here I ran into two more closures with both involving a steep descent that then had to be backtracked on. Eventually I got down to and across the river and onto a trail beside a rail line that took me into Torrelavega which was a big complex town to work my way across with the bonus of a complex motorway junction to avoid.
