In this oil painting timelapse, I share the process behind an expressive portrait inspired by a real encounter in Montreal. Last summer, while walking along Rue Mont-Royal, I met a man, let’s call him Bob, whose presence, style, and restless speech immediately caught my attention. I took a series of photos, as I often do, working like a contemporary impressionist with a cellphone, trying to capture fleeting moments of life. During our conversation, one phrase stayed with me. He kept repeating: “We are not free anymore here in this country.” Months later, back in Colombia, I decided to turn that moment into a painting. This portrait began with a projected pencil drawing and a burnt sienna underpainting to establish tonal structure. From there, I moved into a direct oil painting process, pushing detail in the face and arm while keeping other areas looser and more atmospheric. The palette remains mostly warm, with subtle cooler accents to create tension and depth. This piece explores not only likeness, but psychological presence — the feeling of someone who might already be living in a post-apocalyptic reality while the rest of us are just starting to notice.
