How do scientists prove that putting water on fields in winter actually helps refill the aquifer by summer? Geochemistry. Dr. Laura Foglia's team uses two environmental tracers to track water movement through the Scott Valley watershed: hydrogen isotopes, which act as a unique "fingerprint" for water from different sources, and radon gas, which accumulates in groundwater but not in rain or snowmelt. Sampling from creeks, ditches, and wells every two weeks, they can follow water from the surface all the way down to the aquifer — and back to the river. The standout result? A 17-foot rise in groundwater at one monitoring well after a single winter recharge period. Rainfall alone can't explain that. 🔗 Watch Part 1 on Managed Aquifer Recharge: • Running Out of Groundwater?
