The Călușari are members of a fraternal secret society who practice a ritual acrobatic dance known as the căluș. Originating in Romania, this ancient ritual spread to Bulgaria and North Macedonia, and today, it is still performed in the Serbian village of Grebenac, near Bela Crkva in Vojvodina. This ritual is a key part of the Shrove Monday celebrations, marking the arrival of spring and the start of the Carnival or Shrovetide festivities before Lent. The Călușari are believed to possess magical powers, particularly in healing, and are known for their dramatic acrobatic dances performed in colorful attire, including white trousers, embroidered shirts, and brightly colored ribbons. The group, traditionally composed of young men, travels from house to house performing their dance to chase away evil spirits of winter and to bring health and prosperity for the coming year. The Călușari dance has deep pagan roots, with connections to ancient purification and fertility rites. The dance is said to symbolize the galloping of a horse, representing the solar cult, and is linked to mythological figures like the Queen of the Fairies (Doamna Zânelor). The Călușari’s ritual dance has even been compared to similar traditions such as the Morris dancers of England, sharing similarities in movements and the symbolic representation of life, death, and resurrection. In Grebenac, where the majority of the population is of Romanian ethnicity, this tradition has been preserved and continues to thrive. The Călușari are an important cultural marker of Romanian identity in Vojvodina and an integral part of the region’s folklore. This incredible ritual dance is not only a symbol of spring and renewal but also a cultural heritage that connects the past with the present, preserving the rich traditions of the Romanian minority in Serbia. Witness this beautiful, acrobatic carolling dance ritual performed on 18 March 2024 in Grebenac, Serbia and learn about the Călușari’s profound cultural and spiritual significance. #Călușari #Căluș #Kalush #BalkanCulture #FolkDance #ShroveMonday #Carnival #Poklade #SpringRituals #RomanianCulture #Vojvodina #Serbia #CulturalHeritage #TraditionalDance #Folklore #CulturalExploration #Culture If you like this video, please LIKE and SUBSCRIBE.
