BMW i3 is set to become the first fully electric version of the iconic 3 Series, and prototypes are already undergoing extreme winter testing in Sweden. Built on BMW’s brand-new Neue Klasse platform, this next-generation electric sedan promises major improvements in performance, charging speed, and efficiency. The upcoming i3 is expected to deliver up to 469 horsepower from a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system, powered by BMW’s sixth-generation electric drivetrain. Thanks to an advanced 800-volt architecture, the car could support ultra-fast charging speeds of up to 400 kW, significantly reducing charging times while increasing driving range. BMW engineers are currently testing the vehicle at the famous winter testing facility in Arjeplog, where frozen lakes and icy roads help fine-tune traction, suspension, and stability systems. One of the most advanced features being tested is the Heart of Joy control unit, a new system that works together with BMW Dynamic Performance Control software to manage power delivery, steering, braking, and energy regeneration. According to BMW, this next-generation control architecture reacts up to 10 times faster than previous systems, allowing the electric sedan to maintain the precise handling and driving balance that the legendary BMW 3 Series is known for. Production of the new BMW i3 is expected to begin in the second half of 2026, while the official design reveal is scheduled for March 18, 2026.
