Jonathan Spicer, BSc (Hon), MD, PhD, FRCS, McGill University, Montreal, Canada, outlines how the employment of surgery as a treatment is adjusting to meet the positive outcomes associated with preoperative chemoimmunotherapy. He notes that the favored minimally invasive surgery techniques can still be employed in settings where patients are prescribed preoperative chemoimmunotherapy, despite the extra challenges that this can pose. This therapy also provides an opportunity to significantly reduce the extent of the surgery performed, or potentially rule out the need for surgery entirely in select patients.
