At some places, fish could not spawn because the water temperature was high. We measured the water in the canal and it was 30 degrees Celsius. The fish pulled out and sandbars came out. Boat passing behind sand excavation STORYLINE: Severe drought has hit southeastern Europe, destroying crops on the scorched land and endangering shipping on the second-longest river in Europe, the Danube. The Conopljankso reservoir, situated in northern Serbia, has almost dried up due to this summer's high temperatures, lack of rain and years of human neglect. Milan Stokrpa, the head of the Association of Hunters in the nearby village of Conoplja, said local fishermen have tried to address the issue many times, but never got any answer or help from authorities. The dry reservoir bed is littered with dead fish unable to survive the drought. "Look what we have come to today, to the complete disappearance of water. This little bit is what is left, and that's it," said Stokrpa. "You can see the fish bones. It's a sadness, what can I say," he added. Serbian authorities have also started deepening the Danube by pulling out sand from the waterway to maintain access for ships along the river. Dragan Jakovljevic, who lives in the village of Cortanovci on the banks of the Danube, said he has not seen such low water levels in years.
