Live from the UNT Dallas Rail Symposium, a live Supply Chaney podcast conversation with Michelle Bowling (Oliver Wyman) and Allan Rutter (Texas A&M Transportation Institute). As always, we covered the personal story, professional journey, and practitioner insights behind the work happening in rail and transportation. A few of the biggest insights from the conversation: Rail is full of career paths most people never think about. From railcar storage to industrial rail operations to consulting and infrastructure investment, the rail ecosystem goes far beyond the Class I railroads. Shippers are more optimistic about rail — but still not using it more. One key reason from Oliver Wyman’s shipper survey: rail is still too complicated to navigate compared to trucking, where a rate can often be quoted in seconds. Technology and automation are accelerating across every mode. Autonomous trucks are being tested heavily in Texas thanks to flat terrain and favorable regulations, while ports, intermodal yards, and railroads are increasing automation and sensor-based monitoring. Leadership lesson: the expectations you set on Day 1 stick forever. Whether it’s work-life boundaries or team culture, early habits quickly become the standard. Your network can change the trajectory of your career. When one transportation agency shut down entirely, Allan landed on his feet because of the relationships he had built across the industry. One of my favorite lines from the conversation: Working in rail is kind of like Disneyland… you can move around the park and try completely different careers without ever leaving the industry. Great conversation, great audience, and always fun bringing the Supply Chaney podcast on the road. #SupplyChain #Rail #Logistics #Transportation #Freight #SupplyChaney #UNTDallas
