The History of the Honda CR85R from 2003-2007 Honda CR85 tuning tips, flaws&fixes, best value mods SUBSCRIBE for more dirt bike history´s, CR60 CR80 CR125 tips History: The Honda CR85R is a 2-stroke motocross bike produced by Honda from 2003 to 2007. It was discontinued in 2007 and replaced with the CRF150R 4-stroke bike. The CR85R Expert variant has larger wheels and a longer swingarm. It therefore has a higher ground clearance and seat height. The CR85R Expert cannot race in the regular 85cc class in the AMA. The level of performance in the 85cc wars was raised in 2001 when Kawasaki, who has been a class leader in the 80cc division, upped the performance ante by increasing displacement of their KX to 85 cubic centimeters, the limit for engine size in the junior division. The following year both Suzuki and Yamaha upped their 80cc models to match the size of the Kawi. Declinig to play the role of a lemming, the CR was still displacing just 80cc´s. Flaws: forks, damping Fixes: springs Best Value Mods: flat slide carb (05-07), porting, fork+damper springs Cylinder: The port timing of the stock cylinder is OK for most riders. For expert riders, I suggest widening the right rear transfer port to 17mm, the same width as the corresponding left rear transfer. The exhaust port can be raised to a maximum height of 24mm, measured from the top of the cylinder. These mods will help top-end power. One common problem wo watch for all CR85s and CR80s is chronic head gasket leaks. The problem is not the head or gasket, it´s the top of the cylinder. The surface has imperfections all around the stud holes and water ports. The way to fix this problem is to start by removing the studs, then lapp the top surface of the cylinder on a flat surface using medium grit sandpaper as an abrasive medium. In 2005 Honda changed the cylinder porting, carb and exhaust pipe flange to a better design but the CR85 never received a power-valve system. Big Bores: Wiseco makes a Pro-Lite piston kit to convert the 85cc cylinder to 99cc. This kit is designed for use with overboring and electro-plating. Cometic. makes a steel head gasket to fit the larger 51mm bore size. This 100cc conversion also requires a modification to the cylinder head. Some companies are offering larger pistons for the CR, but that can present many other problems related to crankshaft balance and the demands on the cooling system. The Wiseco 99cc piston kit makes the engine more reliable than stock! !!!KEEP ON BRAAAAPIN!!! DirtBikeDudeZ
