In many organizations, leases are treated as the domain of property managers or legal teams. Facility managers often inherit the operational responsibilities without ever being brought into the conversations that define the rules, obligations, and limitations they’re expected to work within. And that gap can create real challenges—budget surprises, compliance issues, service-level misunderstandings, and missed opportunities to advocate for the facility’s needs. This session is designed to help close that gap. When facility managers understand the language, the structure, and the intent behind these documents, it leads to better decisions, smoother operations, and fewer headaches down the road. Robb LaBossiere, IFMA Boston Think Tank Committee Co-Chair and Senior Property Manager Life Sciences at BXP (formerly Boston Properties), will lead the group through the process of reviewing, understanding and enforcing commercial leases. Topics covered will includes the various types of leases as well as landlord and tenant responsibilities including operating expense as well as repair and maintenance obligations. There will also be an overview of other key lease sections that impact Facility Managers. SPEAKER BIO: Robb has spent more than 25 years in the commercial real estate industry, taking on roles in construction engineering, leasing, and property and facility management. Over the course of his career, he’s worked with several major local and regional organizations, including Turner Construction, Cummings Properties, and American Tower. He now serves at BXP (formerly Boston Properties) as Senior Property Manager, where he manages over 1 million square feet of life science space for a genetic research institute in Kendall Square, Cambridge. Robb is an active member of IFMA and currently serves as Co‑Chair of the Think Tank Committee. He also holds a B.A. in Political Science from Boston College.
