Tom Rice (AAS) & Donna Richardson (SETI Institute) — Introduction to the session, the AAS Solar Eclipse Task Force, and the Harlow Shapley Visiting Lectureships. How does a scientific community organize to reach an entire continent? In this opening session, Tom Rice (American Astronomical Society) and Donna Richardson (SETI Institute) introduce the collaborative efforts behind some of the most successful astronomy outreach programs in North America. From the decade-long preparation for the Great North American Eclipses to the "rebirth" of the historic Harlow Shapley Visiting Lectureships, this talk celebrates the power of partnership. Donna Richardson takes us through the pilot year of the relaunched Shapley program, highlighting stories of astronomers traveling thousands of miles to reach community colleges, local schools, and even Halloween star parties. Key Highlights: The AAS Solar Eclipse Task Force: A decade of planning, workshops, and mini-grants that prepared North America for 2017, 2023, and 2024. The Harlow Shapley Visiting Lectureships: The history and 2026 full relaunch of a program that brings experts to local communities. NASA Community College Network (NCCN): How collaboration between AAS and SETI is creating direct pathways for community college students into four-year universities. Impact Stories: Real-world examples of outreach—from NewsChannel 3 features in Tennessee to 1,800-mile road trips through Texas. The 2026 Relaunch: What’s next for the Shapley program and how the community can get involved.
