In this presentation from Culture Reframed's virtual event "Pornography & Prostitution: Connecting the Dots," Vednita Carter explores the ties between prostitution and sex work. An anti-sex trafficking activist, author, and founder of Breaking Free, a non-profit organization whose mission is to end all forms of prostitution and sex-trafficking, Vednita has extensive experience in developing, planning, and implementing programs for sex trafficked women and girls. For decades prostitution has been known as the oldest profession, which leads people to believe that since it’s a profession it is a form of work, a job like any other job. It is assumed that women who sell their bodies do so because they choose to. The belief has been that women make lots of money in prostitution doing what they do best while enjoying it. In this session, Vednita explores how aligning prostitution with profession has been damaging to women, especially Black Women.
