Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni secures his seventh term in a controversial election held amid an opposition crackdown and internet shutdown. According to the UN human rights office, the election was taking place in an environment marred by ‘widespread repression and intimidation’. Museveni, who seized power in 1986, has been praised for bringing stability and channeling economic growth in post-independence Uganda. Yet his critics say he has remained in power through systematic suppression of dissent. Museveni defeated his main challenger, 43-year-old Bobi Wine, who is now assumed to be hiding for his own protection. Earlier, the opposition candidate accused the government of arresting hundreds of his supporters and cracking down on his rallies. As the 81-year-old leader prepares to extend his rule into a fifth decade, what is next for Uganda? And will the opposition have a chance to rise up again?
