This particular HDT VH Commodore SS wrote its place in Bathurst history as the first car to win the race twice, taking the honours in both the 1982 and 1983 James Hardie 1000s. At the time Brock’s battles with Queensland Ford hero Dick Johnson unfolded on a nearly weekly basis. Johnson won the Australian Touring Car Championship in both 1981 and 1982, prompting Brock and the HDT to wheel out a new weapon, the SS Commodore. While the new car offered the HDT many refinements, its real advantage lay in its more powerful big-valve engine, combined with the lighter weight of a basic Commodore shell. Brock debuted this very car in the 1982 Castrol 400 at Sandown. The new car was incredibly fast, qualifying a full second under Brock’s existing lap record, but a gearbox problem took him out while leading. Brock was joined at Bathurst by new co-driver Larry Perkins. Despite early pace from Allan Grice in the Re-Car Commodore, Brock and Perkins took the chequered flag over a lap ahead of the second-placed Grice. The win was the sixth for Brock and the first time a car carrying Channel 7’s Racecam in-car camera had won the race. Brock finished third in the 1983 Australian Touring Car Championship in this car, taking round victories in Adelaide and at Lakeside in Queensland. As was the custom at the HDT, Brock debuted a brand new car at the start of the 1983 endurance series, and the 1982 Bathurst-winner was passed to team-mate John Harvey to run as car #25. Brock’s brand new car bent an engine valve in the early stages at Bathurst so the HDT took advantage of the regulations that allowed Brock to take over the #25 car in place of Harvey’s co-driver Phil Brock – Peter’s brother. Harvey and Brock were joined in car #25 by Larry Perkins and the trio drove on to share a unique victory. It was the first time in Bathurst race history that the winning car was piloted by three drivers. This was the seventh Bathurst win for Brock, the first for Harvey and the second straight win for this particular car in The Great Race.
