Large-scale training at the South African Army Battle School brought together the full strength of the SADF’s armoured and artillery forces. The Olifant Main Battle Tank, derived from the Centurion, formed the backbone of these manoeuvres with its 105mm main gun and modernised powertrain. Supporting it were the nimble Eland armoured cars, renowned for their speed and versatility in reconnaissance roles. The Ratel infantry combat vehicles demonstrated mobility and firepower in concert with the artillery support of the G5 155mm howitzers, whose long-range accuracy provided the reach needed for coordinated battlefield operations. These exercises at Lohatla showcased the effectiveness of South Africa’s combined-arms doctrine and the technical proficiency achieved through rigorous training. For many observers and veterans, this remains a powerful example of the professionalism and engineering capability that defined the SADF’s approach to armoured warfare and self-reliant defence development.
