Over 400,000 innocent Americans are currently held in jail. Why? Because of a policy called cash bail. If you didn't already know, cash bail is a specific amount of money a defendant has to pay in order to be released from jail after their initial arrest, but before their trial, if they show up for court, the money is then given back. And this is uniquely an American system. The United States is the only other country in the world apart from the Philippines to enforce cash bail. The debate over cash bail is heating up, so I thought it would be useful to look back into how the cash bail system started in the first place, being altered throughout generations, and leading us to where we are today. #explainervideo #explained #history #criminaljustice Sources used: NPR Illinois Gotham Gazette CAN TV Real Stories ABC 7 Chicago WMBD News Bill of Rights Institute National Geographic Society The Atlantic The J Paul Getty Museum history.com Rootsweb Sage Publications London Lives Quora Thomas Guild Historia Britannica History Today pilmoth.org National Endowment for the Humanities Grunge.com NPR Hasbro Sydney Living Museums SCOTUS Blog Cayuga Museum foundsf.org Bail Agent Network CNBC cvltnation.com BBC Three A&E AJ+ The New York Times NYCLU unsplash.com CNN.com dailymail.co Nevada State Journal Library of Congress cdn.com Reagan Library Newsweek latimes.com ctmirror.org Howbailbondswork.com politico.com U.S. Probation & Pretrial Services, District of MN Minimalist.co.id Teen Vogue TIME Coalition For Juvenile Justice ucla.edu huckmag.com amny.com #CashBail #Explainer #CriminalJustice
