Psilocybin-informed Neurofeedback - Heather Hargraves, Mapping The Mind 2018

The use of psychedelics to access the unconscious, and even other dimensions, for therapeutic and healing purposes, is a vast topic with an equally vast history. The focus of this presentation is on the possible relationships between psilocybin, the active ingredient in psychedelic mushrooms, it’s corresponding electrical signature and operation in the brain, and EEG signature. Brainwave biofeedback, better known as EEG neurofeedback, along with EEG brain mapping, gives us a powerful window into the way chemicals affect the brain, and how, in turn, chemical and electrical activity in the brain can support, modify or conflict with the brain and its function. My recent master’s thesis focused upon the neuro-electrical simulation of psilocybin, via the inhibition of specific electrical activity in the brain, as directed by neurofeedback. We will review the research and it’s clinical, as well as subjective (i.e., phenomenological) impact. Finally, we discuss “next steps” in this line of research and where it might lead.
