A day hiking the Grey Mares Waterfall Trail, Kinlochleven, Scotland. The village of Kinlochleven sits at the head of beautiful Loch Leven, which is the loch on which Glencoe and Ballachulish are situated. There is a sister village called Kinlochmore also in the vicinity. We identified the Grey Mares Waterfall Trail as a walk we wanted to do to explore the area around Kinlochleven and had a beautiful day at the end of May when we came to do it. The waterfall appeared pretty quickly on the trail and required a tricky scramble to get close enough to view it properly. There were a lot of people there and I was short of room, so did my best to show the falls as well as I could. There may be better views if you cross the river on a pole with a chain for balance, but the crowd and a tricky crossing, which I judged impossible whilst holding a camera gimble meant I chose not to do that. The waterfall was nonetheless impressive. The walk from there was very challenging, with significant ascent on a path that was loose underfoot and the heat proved energy sapping, so we didn’t really complete the trail. We reached the decision to stop after we’d arrived at some signs high on the hillside and all that remained of the trail was another steep ascent across grassland and then a walk along a road, which forms part of the West Highland Way, so we didn’t feel we were missing too much, so just cut our losses and climbed up to a small knoll with a lone tree a bit further up. The knoll had a great view down Loch Leven to the Pap of Glencoe and some of the Mamores mountain range. Though we found it quite difficult, the walk was very beautiful, with the waterfall and loch view the obvious highlights.
