He learned first from his parents, then from a vast range of gurus including his aunt Manik Verma, Ram Deshpande, Yashwanthbua Joshi, Ulhas Kashalkar, Girija Devi, and Shrinivas Khale. A period of study as an ITC Sangeet Research Academy scholar further sharpened his control, and his performance career goes from strength to strength with a growing resume of awards. A dedicated vocal master known as Gunidas (‘worshipper of virtue’), he blended Raag Jog and Raag Chandrakauns, two starkly differing forms, to create a finely balanced new raga. Gharana-blending singer Kumar Gandharva picked up on the new sound, and it gained acclaim on the concert platform in the 1950s. It ascends pentatonically with the swaras SGmdNS, and descends with SNdPm, GmgS - thus combining the shuddha Ni of Chandrakauns with the characteristic Gmg vakra (zig-zag) phrase of Jog. The resulting mood is full of complex tensions. In the words of musicologist Rajan Parrikar, “Jogkauns is a masterpiece of musical thought, all the pieces conforming to one another and to an organic whole.
