ANN News Editor Tom Patton spent some time talking with Chris Holder of Concorde Battery while at EAA AirVenture 2013. Tom asks Chris why it's important to capacity test your battery. Chris tells Tom that measuring the voltage doesn't tell the whole story. Because your battery is important for emergency use if the generator fails, you'd like to know that it has the capacity to last a while. For example, a 33 amp-hour battery should last for at least 51 minutes at a 33 amp load. If it doesn't have the capacity, even though the voltage is showing good, it won't last as long as you expect. Chris recommends doing a capacity test at least once a year. Chris told us there's more than one way to charge a battery. Something called a conditioning charge can actually bring a battery back to the proper capacitance in some cases. Watch the video and get the details; you'll find it interesting.
