Language Structures and Verbal Reasoning: Missing Links in Close Reading Lessons Gough and Tunmer's Simple View of Reading (SVR) identifies two major components of reading comprehension: word recognition and language comprehension. Join Dr. Tolman to experience the 'why' behind the need for direct, explicit instruction for language structures and cohesive ties, two of the many strands that intertwine to enable close reading. Dr. Tolman is a national and international literacy consultant at the state, district, and school levels. Along with Dr. Louisa Moats, Dr. Tolman is the co-author and lead trainer of LETRS, 3rd ed. (Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling). Carol's passion is rooted in her experiences for over 25 years as a special educator, spending 12 of those years designing and implementing an innovative, exemplary program for academically challenged high school students. Carol's life passion centers on her family and on enabling high-quality instruction for every child. She is excited to support PATTAN's exemplary conference.
