Candy 500-Boiling Hot Velvety Soft

Bio by She Rox All Female Bands, Portland, Oregan based Candy 500 began in the early 1990’s and were at the forefront of Portland’s emerging punk scene. Fronted by husky voiced siren, Ursula Wehr along with drummer Jennifer Stefanick and guitarist Cindy “Cyn” Williams, the band would replace their then bass player in 1993 with Elizabeth Deal who had previously played with Cindy and Ursula in the band 69 Ways. A buzz over the band began to grow outside of the local Portland scene and soon found themselves signed to the infamous record label, Sympathy for the Record Industry, considered at the time a holy grail for any up and coming punk or indie band, the label boosted many bands to much more mainstream exposure, and even saw bands such as Red Aunts and the Lunachicks record early material with the label, to mention a few. The Loretta Hog Story a seven-track ep was released in 1994 and received positive reviews for its tongue in cheek lyrics, crunchy guitar hooks and snotty attitude. The ep itself proved the band did not fit in a packaged genre of the current 1990’s music, they mixed grunge, punk, indie and even elements of hard rock in their musical style. Playing in support of huge artist like Hole and Veruca Salt only opened the band up even further to new fans, they seemed to be destined to make their mark in the growing popularity of the grunge music scene, however with the departure of bassist Elizabeth Deal the band seemed to falter afterwards. Candy 500 would continue on and recruited bassist Kelly Manahan then releasing the singles Dicklicious/Shadow of your Smile in 1995 and the single Polluted/Dirty Sweet, each on different record labels however the once fun undertones of the writing and overall production of the singles failed to live up to the potential contained within The Loretta Hog Story ep. Several of the band’s demos would surface on various compilation albums during this time and the band would once again see another bass player depart the line-up. Bassist Juliette Jones was brought in as the replacement for Kelly Manahan, and longtime guitarist Cindy Williams was replaced by seasoned guitarist Dale Balenseifen known for her work in the co-ed band Kill Sybil and the all-female mid 1990’s indie band Juned. The new members seemed to breathe new life in the band at least from a listener’s point of view and signed with well-known Seattle based label Sub-Pop. The 1997 three song single, This is It! produced by famed grunge rock producer Jack Endino who has been called the “Godfather of Grunge” has been labeled by many as the band’s best work, highlighting the standout track Boiling Hot, Velvety Soft, proves the band as a tight cohesive unit and back are the punchy guitar licks rounded out with Ursula’s hypnotic and distinctive vocals. This is It! as a single should have been the upward trajectory needed to catapult the band further along towards more mainstream success but sadly the band disbanded afterwards, actual reasons why have not been documented but perhaps with the popularity of the grunge scene waning by the late 1990’s played a part in the band’s demise. Boiling Hot Velvety Soft, from the 1997 single This Is It! Ursula Wehr-Vocals, Jennifer Stefanick-Drums, Dale Balenseifen-Guitar, Juliette Jones-Bass. ***Huge thanks and photo credits to David Ackerman for the rare live photos. .
