The movie is a historical retrospective of Italy since the early twentieth century until the end of World War II, based on the life of Olmo, the bastard son of peasants, and Alfredo, scion of a wealthy family of landowners, who despite nurture one friends since childhood, are placed in politically and ideologically antagonistic poles because of their social origins, portraying the intense political scene that marked Italy and the world in the early decades of the twentieth century, represented by the strengthening of labor struggles linked to socialism as opposed the rise of fascism.
