Purine and Pyrimidine Catabolism Pathway - Nucleotide Breakdown - Biochemistry Lesson

Lesson on the purine and pyrimidine degradation pathway, the critical enzymes involved in the pathway (xanthine oxidase) and what the body does with the products of pyrimidine catabolism (beta alanine and beta aminoisobutyrate) and purine catabolism (uric acid). In this lesson, I describe each step of purine destruction to uric acid, explaining each explaining why accumulation of uric acid can cause disease and what treatments are possible to treat high levels of uric acid and gout. I also discuss the purine salvage pathway, the role of the HGPRT enzyme in the pathway and briefly describe the genetic condition associated with deficiency in the HGPRT enzyme (Lesch-Nyhan Syndrome).
