About this video:- Indira Point is the southernmost tip of India, located on Great Nicobar Island in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Here’s a brief history and background: ⸻ Geographical Importance: • Indira Point lies on Great Nicobar Island, in the Nicobar district of the Union Territory of Andaman and Nicobar Islands. • It is the southernmost point of India and lies just about 145 km from Sumatra, Indonesia. • Coordinates: 6°45′10″N 93°49′36″E ⸻ Historical Background: • Originally known as Pygmalion Point, and later as Parsons Point during British rule. • Renamed Indira Point in 1985 in honor of Indira Gandhi, India’s former Prime Minister, following her assassination in 1984. • A lighthouse was commissioned there in 1972 to aid navigation. ⸻ 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami: • Indira Point was severely affected by the tsunami on December 26, 2004. • The tsunami caused massive submergence — the land dropped by about 4.25 meters. • Many structures, including the lighthouse keeper’s quarters, were damaged or destroyed. • Several people, including residents of the nearby village, were reported missing or dead. ⸻ Current Status & Strategic Importance: • Indira Point remains an important strategic location for India, given its proximity to international shipping lanes and Southeast Asia. • India has plans for infrastructure development in Great Nicobar, including a transshipment port and better connectivity. • Indira Point is now often visited by researchers, navy patrols, and occasionally tourists (with permission). ⸻ Would you like photos, maps, or info on future development plans around Indira Point too?
