Inspired by the Bhagavad Gita, Field of Dharma integrates Carnatic and Western classical music. Movement IV, Realization (Swaram in raga Charukesi): Arjuna experiences a moment suspended between despair and decision, between the human and the divine. In this moment Lord Krishna delivers his fundamental teachings, evoked here as swarams – melodic explorations that return to a theme at a fixed point in the rhythmic cycle. The tempo accelerates and the lines overlap to condense and intensify the rhythm, and then Lord Krishna reveals himself: He is all the colors, all the creatures, from the seers to the serpents to the lotus-seated Lord Brahma Himself. He is the deathless and all-sustaining creator and destroyer who transcends being and non-being. The limitations of Arjuna’s perspective are shattered. Arjuna’s theme returns, this time not as a lament, but rather as an affirmation of his own position within the whole. A crash resounds: Arjuna takes his place on the field of dharma. This original composition in 4 movements is from the album Confluence: Raga and Counterpoint. The album's music brings the intricacy of Carnatic ragas and gamakas (expressive inflections and curves) into the architecture of Baroque counterpoint and Western harmony. (Counterpoint is the combination of multiple independent melodic lines.) Field of Dharma draws on the structure of both the Carnatic kriti and the Western concerto. It features interaction between soloists within an orchestral setting, with counterpoint often shaping their exchange. The other work in the album is Fugue-Kriti.
