We return to Trieste on a cold Saturday in February, because we have the unmissable opportunity to take a trip on a truly special vehicle, and although it is not something "lost", this time we want to break the rule and tell you about a train that, although it belongs to another era, still exists and works perfectly. It is the legendary "Arlecchino", a masterpiece of Italian design from the 1950s that was recently restored after years of abandonment. The front of the train has a very particular shape that resembles the fuselage of an airplane, in which a panoramic area was created for travelers, who could enjoy an exclusive view of the track, as if they were driving the train, and it is a unique feature of this train. Although more than half a century has passed since that distant 23 July 1960, when the first Arlecchino made its inaugural trip between Bologna and Venice, the emotions that you feel today in front of this train are probably the same as back then. Its very particular rounded shapes, with the panoramic viewpoint on the front suspended between the two long protruding wheel arches, recall the fuselage of an airplane. It is a unique rolling stock, a masterpiece of Italian design from the 1950s that also became an icon of the economic boom of the time. And even today it is considered, not by chance, one of the most beautiful and elegant trains in the world. Called ETR 250 Arlecchino, this electric train was the short version of its bigger brother, ETR 300 Settebello, with which it shared shapes and external aesthetic appearance, but with 4 carriages instead of 7, a feature that made it more versatile and agile. The interior fittings were also similar, designed for high-ranking services, although not reaching the splendor of its bigger brother from which it derives. The Harlequin represents the apotheosis of railway engineering in the 1960s. Thanks to the newly designed bogies designed for high speeds and the traction distributed throughout the convoy with 6 engines, it was the most advanced train of the FS. Worthy heir of the famous ETR 221 from which it derived, it was light and agile, the ideal vehicle for rapid services, capable of reaching 180 km/h offering passengers a unique travel experience in the panoramic lounges. After completing the tests in March 1960 with satisfactory results, on the following 23 July the new electric train entered service, shortly before the opening of the Olympic Games. Built in only 4 units, the Harlequin despite its excellent qualities, over time proved inadequate due to the low passenger capacity that relegated it to increasingly marginal routes. When the last regular services ended in 1986, it was thought to convert the harlequins into charter trains, an idea that however did not have success and led towards the end of the 90s, to the definitive shelving of the 4 trains awaiting demolition. Model 252 was miraculously saved from the oxyacetylene flame and thanks to the FS Foundation the train was preserved to begin a meticulous restoration in 2016. After 3 years of work, in 2020 the renovated harlequin was finally ready for the first test runs, and the beginning of a new life as a historic agency train.
