Middle ear infections go by the medical terminology Otitis Media Otitis Media are generally of two types Safe - usually associated with a simple perforation of the middle portion of the eardrum and successfully treated by a Myringoplasty or Tympanoplasty surgery Unsafe- The disease is made unsafe by a marginal perforation, or by the formation of white chalk-like debris called cholesteatoma. There are granulations and destruction of bone and vital structures in and around the ear. This kind of disease has many complications including sensorineural deafness, Giddiness, Facial nerve paralysis, infections of the Veins in the brain, brain abscesses, etc. To eradicate the disease as well as to halt the progression of the disease the ENT Specialist needs to perform a Mastoidectomy surgery where infected tissue is completely removed. This makes the ear safe and dry. There may be an attempt to reconstruct the hearing during the same surgery if possible or else hearing reconstruction may be done at a later date. Mastoidectomy can typically and most commonly be of 2 types- Canal Wall UP (CWU) or Canal Wall Down (CWD). Mastoidectomy surgery when performed in expert hands is a fairly safe surgery.
