HELPING OTHERS UNDERSTAND HOW THINGS WORK: We are in the midst of an explanation of discipleship. Yesterday I was able to listen to an incredible discipleship process going on in the seat behind me. Here is how it happened: I was sitting in a plane yesterday heading out of Chicago, studying the Spirit of God. Bonnie was right beside me working on her Sunday school lesson. Then the discipling began right behind me. I couldn't help but hear the conversation of an older couple behind me. They must have recently gotten a smartphone. The conversation went like this, “Look what happens when I swipe up. I can turn on the flashlight”. Then the other one says, “How did you do that? Does mine have that?” “Yes, all of them can one, just do this”. Then I heard, “Wow, what else can I do?” And on went such a cute time of sharing by one a few steps further down the road of understanding how to operate this device of theirs. DISCIPLESHIP: COMMUNICATING WHAT YOU UNDERSTAND One person helping another to use a feature that they had learned, tried, used, understood, and now can communicate. It was so simple, so natural, so much a part of everyday life. That is what Christianity became in the lives of early believers, making it so portable as churches were planted and the Gospel spread. Communicating what you understand in your own, personal, growing walk with Christ is what discipleship is all about! Now back to my older couple with the new iPhone. To explain their smartphone to each other: Those two people behind me on the plane didn't have to go to Chengdu in China to the assembly plant to understand the phone, they didn't have to go to Mountain View, California to Apple HQ, they don't even have to go to the Genius Bar at the Apple Store. No, all it took was a friend helping a friend take the next step of understanding the functionality of their operating system. That is what we are doing today, gathering to look in our instruction manual (the Bible), and learning a bit more about our OS (operating system), which is completely tied to the Spirit of God.
